Wakaru shows Japanese as plain, tappable text and lets you work out the meaning yourself, then check it word by word. Read messages, scan manga, and build your replies one sentence at a time.

No instant translation. Tap any word to confirm your guess, and ask for a full grammar breakdown only when a sentence will not click. You remember far more from working it out.
Paste a message from a chat or a language-exchange partner, or point your camera at a single manga speech bubble and capture it.
Japanese and kanji breakdowns come from a built-in dictionary that works offline. Your lookups never leave your phone.
Draft a line, optionally check it for grammar, naturalness, and politeness, add it to your reply, and move on. When your reply is ready, run a full-message check for flow and coherence across all your sentences, then copy the finished response.
Save the words worth keeping with one tap, then send the whole queue to an Anki deck in a single step.
Track how much Japanese you are actually doing, from time in the apps you choose to time in calendar lessons and your own quick timers.
The core works offline with no account: Japanese and kanji lookups, the vocabulary queue, and Anki export.
The AI features (grammar explanations, reply checks, manga text recognition, and the higher-quality audio voices) run through OpenRouter using your own API key. You create an account, add a little credit, and pay only for what you use, usually a fraction of a cent per request. Wakaru adds no subscription or markup on top.
